Chieh lives under expectations she never chose: she watches her sister-in-law—desperate to give birth to a son—give in to rituals and superstitions under the crushing pressure of family and society. And while that obsession becomes an everyday rule, Chieh feels a similar weight on her own future, pushed toward marriage and conformity. Everything shifts the day she finds a woman’s body by the river. The authorities summon a priestess to ensure the spirit can rest and won’t haunt the village… and the woman’s unsettling gifts seem very real. Sensing a rare chance to change her life, Chieh decides to become her apprentice. But the peace doesn’t last: small handprints begin to appear on Chieh’s legs while she sleeps, more women vanish, and others are found dead. Set in early 20th-century Taiwan, where a wife’s “happiness” was often measured by producing a male heir, this story blends folklore and history to portray—both beautifully and tragically—the lives, fears, and violence endured by women of the time.
