Synopsis of Volume 8 of One Piece

With their flags flying in the wind, they fight among themselves to reach the great treasure One Piece, the legacy of the legendary pirate king Gold Roger. This great pirate is admired by a boy named Luffy, who has befriended Red-Haired Shanks, captain of a pirate crew that frequently docks in his village's harbor. One day, Luffy eats a demon fruit, a loot obtained by Shanks' crew, and his body gains the properties of rubber.

In exchange, he loses the ability to float in water and, therefore, to swim. While the crew is away from the village, Luffy provokes some mountain bandits whose leader kidnaps him and throws him into the sea. As he struggles to stay afloat, a sea beast arrives to devour him... but Shanks swims to his rescue! Luffy survives, but at the cost of the pirate losing his left arm.

10 years after saying goodbye to Shanks and his crew, with the straw hat that Red-Haired Shanks lent him as a distinctive mark, Luffy sets sail alone. His journey begins with the goal of becoming the king of the pirates!
