It is the age of great pirates. With their flags waving in the wind, they fight among themselves in order to reach the great treasure One Piece, the legacy of the legendary pirate king Gold Roger. This great pirate is the object of admiration for a boy named Luffy, who has become friends with Shanks the Red-Haired, captain of a pirate crew that often anchors their ship at the dock of his village. One day, Luffy eats a devil fruit, a treasure that Shanks' crew had obtained, and his body takes on the properties of elastic rubber.

In return, he loses the ability to float in water and, therefore, to swim. While the crew is away from the village, Luffy provokes some mountain bandits whose leader kidnaps him and throws him into the sea. While struggling to stay afloat, a sea beast arrives to swallow him… but Shanks swims to the rescue and saves him! Luffy survives, but the pirate loses his left arm in the process.

10 years after bidding farewell to Shanks and his crew, with the straw hat that the Red-Haired pirate lent him as a distinctive mark, Luffy sets sail alone. His journey begins with the goal of becoming the Pirate King!
