Synopsis of Volume 4 of Real

Real is an outstanding creation by Takehiko Inoue, renowned for his works Vagabond and Slam Dunk. Awarded the Media Arts Festival prize in 2001, the narrative revolves around basketball but with a unique approach. The story interweaves the lives of three individuals connected to the sport, yet each trapped in contrasting situations. Tomomi Nomiya is a troubled youth who, after being expelled from his school, misses the opportunity to continue playing basketball. Kiyoharu Togawa, an athlete whose future gets halted as he becomes wheelchair-bound due to a bone disease. Lastly, there's Hisanobu Takahashi, the cocky student now leading the basketball team of the school from which Tomomi was expelled. Inoue presents us with a realistic drawing, on par with Vagabond but enriched with a contemporary Japanese setting.
