Sekaiichi Hatsukoi presents us with several separate yet somehow interconnected love stories, all unfolding simultaneously. The first one follows Ritsu Onodera, who—much to his dismay—ends up working in the shojo manga department of a publishing house, instead of the literary division he aspired to. To make matters worse, he gets off on the wrong foot with his boss, editor-in-chief Masamune Takano. Things get even more complicated when he discovers that his new boss is none other than his first love from high school, Masamune Saga. Takano confesses he never got over him and blames Ritsu for being unable to pursue any real relationship since. Ritsu insists Takano is mistaken, but Masamune is set on one goal: to get Ritsu to say "I love you."
