Synopsis of Volume 04 of Evangelion

In an alternative timeline where Shinji Ikari managed to prevent the Human Instrumentality Project, humanity has continued moving forwards while rebuilding what was left behind. Years have passed, and Nerv, now re-established as “Nerv Japan”, operates under the leadership of Misato Katsuragi, who directs the former pilots — now seventeen-year-old teenagers — in a new mission: preparing for the inevitable return of the Angels.

That fragile balance is shattered when Rei No. Quatre, one of the multiple Reis patrolling the world in search of threats, loses control during a devastating incident. Shinji, piloting Unit 01, is forced to neutralise her using a gamma-ray laser shot, after which Rei No. Quatre disappears without a trace.

That event opens the door to a new story filled with possibilities, where old bonds, unknown threats and a profound reinterpretation of the characters' original destinies shape a very different version of Evangelion. Set ten years after episode 24 of the anime, this alternate continuation explores what might have happened if the course of history had taken another path.
