Nene Yashiro is a first-year high school student who attends Kamome Academy, famous for its paranormal events and for also housing the seven legendary mysteries. The seventh mystery is none other than Hanako, a girl who haunts the third-floor bathrooms of the academy and is supposed to grant wishes with the right incentive. However, when Nene decides to summon her to make the boy of her dreams fall in love with her, she is surprised to find out that Hanako is not a girl but a boy. After that wish fails, in another desperate attempt, Nene eats an object from Hanako that is said to help find a partner but curses whoever consumes it. In order to save her, Hanako also eats it, but in exchange, he makes Nene work for him as his assistant. Hanako is responsible for maintaining peace between spirits and humans. To do this, he gets rid of malevolent apparitions, no matter the means he has to use. Little by little, Hanako's past is revealed as the secrets hidden among the seven mysteries of the academy are uncovered.
