Detective Jin Saeki and Kanon, the young girl raised by Jûzô Haikawa, travel to Kuratsuchi in Hokkaido — Haikawa’s birthplace — in search of answers surrounding the mystery of his true identity. What begins as an investigation into a man’s hidden past soon drags them into a horrifying story buried deep within the region’s history, one filled with violence, tragedy, and lingering fear.
Once they arrive, Jin and Kanon uncover details about the infamous “Massacre of the 33,” a brutal incident carried out years earlier by a man named Shûji Inuyama. Born with severe facial deformities and isolated from society for most of his life, Inuyama only managed to form a bond with another child who bore scars similar to his own. After the massacre, he disappeared into the mountains, allegedly intending to end his own life. In his wake, he left behind a sorrowful farewell poem and references to the terrifying legend of the Rikka demons, mysterious beings said to abduct children.
As Jin and Kanon continue digging deeper into the truth, the line between folklore and reality begins to blur. Hidden beneath the cold landscapes of Hokkaido lies a darkness far more disturbing than either of them expected. Their investigation slowly becomes a descent into obsession, trauma, and violence, while a mysterious figure with a scarred face stalks the shadows with murderous intent.
A Suffocating and Lonely Death combines psychological suspense, mystery, horror, and emotional drama in a chilling narrative filled with disturbing secrets and unsettling revelations. Volume 10 pushes the story further into darkness as Jin and Kanon edge closer to uncovering the horrifying truth hidden behind the legends, the murders, and Haikawa’s past.
