Features of Mansions of Madness Board Game by Fantasy Flight Games

Mansions of Madness Board Game by Fantasy Flight Games is a cooperative investigation, mystery and cosmic horror experience set in the unsettling Arkham Horror Files universe, inspired by the works of H. P. Lovecraft. Players take the roles of investigators willing to open doors that any sensible person would leave firmly closed, exploring haunted mansions, Arkham alleyways and other locations where occult secrets, cultists and creatures from beyond rarely lead to anything pleasant.

Designed by Nikki Valens, the game combines exploration, storytelling, puzzle solving, combat and character management within scenarios guided by a digital companion app. Unlike the first edition, every participant now belongs to the same team: the application takes over the role of directing the adventure, handling many events, gradually generating the map and managing the threats that emerge throughout the investigation.

Each scenario features its own story, objectives and difficulty. Investigators move across a modular board that is revealed as they explore, discovering items, interacting with characters, gathering clues and opening rooms that may contain exactly the information they need... or something with considerably too many tentacles. Setup and events can vary between games, meaning that the same scenario does not necessarily unfold in exactly the same way every time.

The group must work together to manage actions and resources, solve puzzles and fight monsters while protecting both physical health and sanity. Every investigator has individual characteristics and abilities, encouraging players to specialise and cooperate. Some characters are particularly effective at finding clues or manipulating objects, while others are considerably better equipped to explain to supernatural creatures, through the use of heavy weaponry, that they have chosen the wrong mansion.

Mansions of Madness stands out for its strong narrative and atmospheric focus. The companion app introduces events, dialogue, unexpected effects and changing environments without requiring one player to know all of the scenario's secrets in advance. This creates a fully cooperative experience and also makes solo play possible, allowing a single player to control investigators attempting to uncover the truth before events spiral completely out of control.

Recommended for 1 to 5 players aged 14 and up, with games lasting approximately 120 to 180 minutes, this is an excellent choice for fans of thematic board games, investigation and Lovecraftian horror. Its large selection of miniatures, modular map tiles and cards creates a highly visual adventure where exploring another room may bring the group closer to solving the mystery... or considerably closer to permanent insanity.
