Cthulhu: Death May Die Board Game is a cooperative action and cosmic horror game in which the investigators are not trying to prevent an Ancient One from entering our world. Instead, they intend to make it appear, render it vulnerable and destroy it. The plan may not sound particularly sensible, but when an apocalyptic cult is about to complete its ritual, reasonable options are already in short supply.
Designed by Rob Daviau and Eric M. Lang, this title combines exploration, combat, investigation and character progression in an experience closely related to a dungeon crawler. Players move through modular locations, battle cultists and Mythos creatures, uncover clues and attempt to complete the specific objectives of each episode. Meanwhile, the ritual continues and the presence of the Ancient One becomes increasingly difficult to contain.
One of the game’s most distinctive mechanics is insanity. Every investigator has a different mental condition that may grant new abilities as their sanity deteriorates. This creates constant tension, as moving closer to madness allows players to unlock powerful upgrades, but also increases the risk of elimination. The challenge is to benefit from that instability without pushing the investigator beyond the point of no return.
The game includes six different episodes, each featuring its own rules, enemies and narrative objectives. These scenarios can be combined with different Ancient Ones, changing the setup and creating very different challenges. In one game, the group may face a monstrous invasion inside a building, while another episode may require them to close portals, sabotage a ritual or survive a situation that grows worse with every round.
Combat is resolved through custom dice and individual character abilities. Each investigator has unique skills that can be improved during the game, allowing players to specialise in attack, defence, movement or group support. Cooperation is essential, because enemies appear quickly and the board can become overwhelmed with threats if the investigators spend too much time trying to solve every problem separately.
Recommended for 1 to 5 players aged 14 and up, with games lasting between 90 and 120 minutes, Cthulhu: Death May Die is designed for fans of thematic board games, detailed miniatures, variable scenarios and intense combat. It can also be played solo by controlling several investigators. This is a demanding, spectacular adventure filled with difficult decisions, where survival matters, but making the Ancient One vulnerable and killing it matters considerably more.
