Zombicide 2E: Rio Z Janeiro Board Game Expansion brings the zombie apocalypse to the streets of Rio de Janeiro in a new narrative campaign compatible with Zombicide Second Edition. The city remains spectacular, colourful and full of life, although much of that life is now chasing the survivors with decidedly unfriendly intentions. A copy of the Zombicide Second Edition core game is required to use this expansion.

Designed by Raphaël Guiton, Jean-Baptiste Lullien and Nicolas Raoult, this expansion introduces a campaign made up of 10 connected missions. The decisions made by the group affect the unfolding story, create new opportunities and influence the challenges that appear later. Rather than playing a series of entirely independent scenarios, players follow an ongoing plot as they search for a mysterious person who may know more about the disaster.

The action moves through different areas of Rio de Janeiro, from narrow alleys to locations inspired by some of the city’s most recognisable neighbourhoods. Seven double-sided game tiles create new maps featuring routes, buildings and zones specifically developed for the campaign. Every mission introduces its own objectives and situations, forcing the survivors to coordinate their movement, manage available equipment and decide whether to push forward or stop to control the growing horde.

One of the expansion’s main additions is its set of Objective cards, which presents narrative choices and changes the direction of the adventure. Wound cards and a campaign sheet pad are also included, allowing the group to record its progress. These elements strengthen the connection between scenarios and give each decision more lasting importance than it would have in a standard standalone mission.

Rio Z Janeiro adds six new Survivors, each with an individual ID card and abilities, together with six Carnival-themed zombies: four Walkers, one Fatty and one Runner. Their appearance transforms the sambadrome into a considerably less welcoming celebration, especially when the entire parade is heading directly towards the group. The new miniatures can be used throughout the campaign and combined with other compatible content from the modern Zombicide line.

Recommended for 1 to 6 players aged 14 and up, with missions lasting approximately 60 minutes, this expansion is intended for groups that already enjoy Zombicide’s cooperative system and want a campaign with stronger narrative continuity. It retains the exploration, action management, dice rolling, weapon searching and escalating zombie hordes of the core game while adding persistent choices and new scenarios. It is an excellent option for players who want to discover whether the energy of Carnival can survive the zombie apocalypse.
