Synopsis of Volume 2 of Barefoot Gen, A Hiroshima Story

The story unfolds nearly two years after the devastation caused by the atomic bomb explosion, leaving Japan under U.S. military occupation. The streets of Hiroshima are filled with patrolling soldiers, but they also echo with the sounds of pain and crying from survivors still struggling to cope with the aftermath of the tragedy. The city lies in ruins, and the people face an uncertain future filled with suffering.

Amidst this backdrop, we meet Gen, who watches as many of his friends become orphans and are at risk of being ensnared by the yakuza, the Japanese mafia. He had lost one of his friends, Acorn, and is determined to prevent the same from happening to Ryuta and the others. Gen's determination leads him to take measures to protect his friends from a similar fate and confront the challenges the post-apocalyptic world presents them.

This narrative captures the harsh and painful post-war period in Hiroshima, as well as the efforts of the survivors to rebuild their lives and protect their loved ones amidst adversity.
